Chinese Mainland Slams Taiwan Authorities for Echoing Philippine Claims Over Ren'ai Jiao Incident

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday strongly criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for backing the Philippines' claims over a recent confrontation at Ren'ai Jiao, accusing them of distorting the facts and smearing the mainland.

Speaking at a regular press conference, Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, responded to remarks made by Taiwan's so-called external affairs authority, which claimed it "condemned" the mainland's use of force, alleging that it caused injuries, and opposed what it described as attempts to unilaterally change the status quo through force, coercion, or "gray-zone harassment."

The comments came after the Philippines accused China following a confrontation at Ren'ai Jiao. Beijing, however, maintains that the incident was triggered by a deliberate provocation by Philippine vessels, which it says violently attacked personnel of the China Coast Guard before subsequently misrepresenting and publicizing the incident.

Zhang said Chinese authorities had promptly clarified the facts surrounding the confrontation, released video footage from the scene, and lodged solemn representations with the Philippine government.

Reaffirming Beijing's territorial claim, Zhang stated that Ren'ai Jiao is part of China's Nansha Qundao and constitutes Chinese territory.

He further accused the DPP authorities of abandoning what he described as their national position by siding with external forces and deliberately confusing right and wrong.

"The DPP authorities have attacked and smeared the mainland, once again exposing their disregard for their roots and their attempt to pursue 'Taiwan independence' by relying on external forces," Zhang said.

The remarks underscore Beijing's continued opposition to what it views as separatist activities by Taiwan's ruling authorities and foreign interference in issues concerning China's sovereignty over the South China Sea.
