As tensions simmer between the United States and Iran, a stark warning is emerging from military analysts: what may look like early success on the battlefield could be laying the groundwork for a far more dangerous and prolonged conflict.

In a recent interview on Amanpour & Company, renowned political scientist Robert Pape outlined what he describes as an “escalation trap” — a pattern in which initial military victories create a false sense of control, drawing countries deeper into war rather than bringing them closer to resolution.

According to Pape, the first phase of this trap is often marked by precision strikes and tactical success. These operations can weaken an opponent in the short term and project strength. But they rarely achieve broader political objectives, such as deterring retaliation or forcing meaningful concessions.

“The danger,” Pape suggests, “is that leaders begin to believe they are in control of the situation.”

That belief, he argues, leads directly into the second phase: doubling down. When initial strikes fail to produce lasting results, policymakers often respond by increasing military pressure. Rather than backing down, the opposing side adapts and retaliates — sometimes asymmetrically — expanding the scope of the conflict.

In Iran’s case, Pape points to its ability to respond beyond conventional battlefields, including targeting regional assets and influencing global energy routes. This creates a situation where each new move raises the stakes, not just for the primary actors but for the wider region.

What follows is the most dangerous phase: uncontrolled escalation. At this stage, options narrow while risks multiply. Leaders may consider more aggressive strategies — including broader military engagement — not necessarily because they want to, but because they feel they have no viable alternative.

The result is a conflict that becomes increasingly difficult to contain.

Pape’s warning is blunt: if this cycle continues, the human cost will rise sharply. “Many will die,” he cautions, underscoring the real-world consequences of strategic miscalculation.

His analysis echoes lessons from past conflicts, where early battlefield gains masked deeper strategic failures. The concern now is that similar patterns may be unfolding again — in a region already fraught with volatility.

Yet, as Pape’s assessment suggests, precision does not guarantee control.
