US Naval Strain and Iran’s Missile Strategy Signal Shifting Dynamics in Middle East Conflict

A recent assessment by the war interpretation group of the Tasnim News Agency suggests that American naval forces involved in operations against Iran may be facing a growing shortage of munitions. According to the report, US destroyers operating in the region—particularly Arleigh Burke-class destroyer—have likely used a significant portion of their missile stockpiles.

The release of images showing cruise missiles being launched from a US submarine near Cyprus has further fueled speculation that these destroyers, once engaged in offensive missions, are now experiencing reduced firepower. Naval experts note that such vessels cannot reload missiles while at sea, forcing them to return to base and temporarily pause operations—potentially weakening both offensive and defensive capabilities in the region.

These developments come amid escalating tensions following Iran’s missile strikes on the Israeli towns of Dimona and Arad on March 21. Despite the presence of advanced air defense systems like THAAD and Iron Dome, experts say such systems remain vulnerable to large-scale, coordinated attacks involving both missiles and drones.

Imad Salamey, an associate professor at the Lebanese American University, explained that the issue is not the failure of a single system but the limitations of even advanced layered defenses when overwhelmed by complex, multi-directional threats.

The situation highlights broader strategic implications. Weaknesses in US missile defense systems—widely deployed to protect American assets across the Middle East—could embolden adversaries. Analysts suggest that missile and drone technologies are increasingly seen as cost-effective tools to challenge technologically superior forces, potentially forcing the United States to rethink its military posture and invest in more integrated defense systems.

Salamey further notes that if Iran continues to demonstrate its ability to strike high-value targets within Israel, it could significantly alter the balance of the conflict. Such a shift may either escalate tensions or push both sides toward indirect negotiations, as the costs and risks of continued confrontation rise.
