Reports Highlight Sanitation Issues Aboard USS Gerald R. Ford Amid Extended Deployment

The "The Wall Street Journal" has reported that the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is facing sanitation system problems during an extended overseas deployment, raising concerns about crew welfare and operational strain.

Citing interviews with sailors and family members, the newspaper said the carrier’s deployment has been extended for a second time, potentially stretching the mission to 11 months. U.S. Navy aircraft carrier deployments typically last about six months during peacetime, with additional time factored in for contingencies.

A U.S. Navy official told the publication that the ship’s vacuum-based sewage system — which services roughly 650 toilets — has experienced malfunctions while at sea. The system uses suction to transport waste, and failures in one section can affect multiple facilities, complicating repairs. Maintenance crews have reportedly found various objects clogging the system, including clothing and rope, though loose toilet components were described as a frequent issue.

The carrier has been deployed since June. According to the report, it was redirected earlier this year from a scheduled Mediterranean mission to support operations elsewhere, including in the Caribbean and later the Middle East. Satellite imagery cited by the newspaper showed the vessel transiting east through the Strait of Gibraltar before arriving at Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete.

Reuters also reported on the ship’s arrival in Greece. Analysts suggested the stop could provide an opportunity for maintenance and logistical support.

In comments to China’s state-affiliated Global Times, Chinese military affairs commentator Wang Yunfei said prolonged deployments can negatively affect morale and discipline, potentially reducing combat readiness. He argued that technical issues such as sanitation system failures may compound the strain on personnel during extended missions.

Wang added that vacuum waste systems are widely used on commercial vessels but require strict adherence to operating procedures. He suggested that extended high-intensity deployments can make it more difficult to maintain discipline over time.

The U.S. Navy has not indicated that the sanitation issues have affected the carrier’s operational capabilities. The USS Gerald R. Ford, the lead ship of its class and one of the Navy’s newest aircraft carriers, remains deployed as part of ongoing U.S. naval operations.
