Anti-Imperialist Global South Alliance Urges UN Action Over Venezuela

The Anti-Imperialist Global South Alliance has called on the United Nations to intervene immediately to prevent what it describes as a looming threat of war by the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the convener of the alliance, Uvindu Wijeweera, appealed for urgent international action to de-escalate tensions and safeguard peace. T

According to the alliance, the appeal reflects growing concern over recent developments involving the United States and their potential impact on Venezuela’s sovereignty and regional stability. The group urged the United Nations to uphold international law and take proactive measures to prevent any military confrontation.

The letter has been formally submitted to the Office of the Secretary-General, calling for immediate attention to the issue.

Subject: Urgent Appeal to Prevent Escalation of Conflict Against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

Your Excellency,

We write to you with grave concern and urgency to appeal for your immediate intervention to prevent the looming threat of war by the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Representatives of seven registered political parties and organizations in Sri Lanka, including the Second-Generation Party, which I represent through the Anti-Imperialist National Forum, addressed a letter to you on 20 October, warning that a United States military intervention against Venezuela was imminent and urging you to act without delay to prevent such an outcome. Subsequently, on 18 December, the Bolivarian Solidarity in Sri Lanka also wrote to you, requesting your intervention as Secretary-General of the United Nations to prevent a potential military conflict in the Caribbean region following the seizure by U.S. forces of an oil tanker belonging to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

We regret to emphasize that, to date, no positive steps have been taken to address these serious concerns. On the contrary, the situation has continued to escalate. Most recently, the United States Coast Guard has again seized an oil tanker belonging to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, further heightening tensions.

In addition, on 2 September 2025, the United States Coast Guard attacked a Venezuelan vessel for the first time under allegations of drug transportation, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals. Furthermore, as of 22 December 2025, at least 30 fishing vessels accused of drug trafficking have reportedly been attacked in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific, leading to approximately 105 fatalities.

We wish to stress that Venezuela is not recognized as a drug-trafficking state, according to reports issued both by the United Nations and by the United States itself. Under these circumstances, it is deeply concerning that the United States appears to be using unfounded allegations as a pretext to draw Venezuela and the wider Caribbean region into a military conflict.

Honorable Secretary-General, you are well aware that the member states of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), meeting in Havana, Cuba, on 28–29 January 2014, adopted the “Special Declaration on the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.” This commitment was subsequently and formally endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 September 2014 through Resolution A/RES/68/304.

In light of this, we strongly affirm that it is your inviolable responsibility to act to preserve Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. The current trajectory of events risks provoking broader regional and international confrontation, particularly involving countries that have made substantial investments in Venezuela and those that firmly oppose coercive measures. Such developments pose a serious threat to global peace and stability.

Therefore, Your Excellency, given the gravity and urgency of the present situation, we earnestly and respectfully urge you to take immediate and decisive action to fulfill your responsibility to actively intervene, de-escalate tensions, and uphold international peace and security.
