Russian President Vladimir Putin offered an improvised time-capsule message addressed to future generations during his year-end press conference on Friday(19).

Responding to a question about what he would write for schoolchildren studying the current era, Putin said such a message would require careful reflection. He noted that people inevitably think about the future of their children, grandchildren, and their country. After a brief pause, he agreed to attempt an answer, remarking that he needed to “put his thoughts in order,” before jokingly adopting a teacher’s tone and instructing the audience to “pick up a pen and write.”

In his message, Putin reflected on continuity between generations, saying that those who lived in Russia during the 20th and 21st centuries gratefully accepted the legacy left by their ancestors. He described their lives as shaped by everyday concerns but emphasized that they continued to move forward—working, fighting, and striving to meet the challenges of their time.

He said that future generations were always in their thoughts and suggested that if the message was being read, it meant the bond between past, present, and future remained intact. That connection, he added, gave meaning to their efforts and sacrifices.

Putin concluded by wishing future generations happiness and good fortune, expressing hope that their descendants would one day feel the same pride in them as they feel today for their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers.
