Wang Yi Warns Against Revival of Militarism, Reaffirms One-China Principle During Middle East Visit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Japan should not repeat historical mistakes by using claims of an “existence-threatening situation” to justify aggression, warning against the revival of militarism as the world approaches key historical anniversaries.

Wang made the remarks after visiting the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan from December 12 to 16, according to a statement released to the media.

He said the three countries reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle and expressed support for China’s efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Wang contrasted their positions with what he described as interference by certain countries in China’s internal affairs, particularly on the Taiwan issue.

During the visit, Wang briefed officials in the three Arab states on China’s position regarding the historical and legal aspects of the Taiwan question. He reiterated China’s opposition to statements and actions by Japanese leaders that it views as interference in the issue.

Wang said mutual support on core interests forms the political foundation of China–Arab relations and added that Arab states’ backing of China’s position on Taiwan upholds the basic principles of international relations. He said the one-China principle enjoys broad international support.

Referring to 2025 as the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Wang said Japan must not repeat the historical mistakes of its wartime militarist past.

He called on countries that value peace to remain vigilant against the resurgence of militarism and fascism and to oppose statements or actions that glorify colonialism and aggression.
