Ecuadorians Defend Constitution and Sovereignty, Says Anti-Fascist Journalists’ Movement

Juliana Jiménez, coordinator of Ecuador’s Anti-Fascist Journalists’ Movement, said Ecuadorians have “defended the constitution and national sovereignty” by rejecting key proposals in President Daniel Noboa’s referendum.

Speaking to the Honduran News Agency, Jiménez noted that—with 98% of ballots counted as of the 17th—voters rejected lifting the constitutional ban on foreign military bases in the country. She added that Ecuadorians also voted down proposals to create a new legislative assembly, reduce the number of lawmakers, and eliminate state funding for political parties.

Smiling, Jiménez said the results reflect a clear mandate: “Ecuadorians have defended Ecuador’s sovereignty.”

Luisa González, former presidential candidate of the Citizens’ Revolution Party, echoed this view. She said the referendum defeat represented a public rejection of Noboa’s attempt to turn Ecuador into “the United States’ backyard.” González accused the government of spending more than $7 million on media promotion aligned with Noboa’s interests, yet “the Ecuadorian people did not fall for the trap.”

According to the National Electoral Council, 60.55% of voters opposed lifting the constitutional veto that prohibits the installation of foreign military bases in Ecuador.
