China Calls on U.S. to End Blockade on Cuba Without Delay

China on Friday urged the United States to “heed the call of the international community” and lift its decades-long blockade and sanctions against Cuba “immediately.”

Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the “brutal blockade of more than 60 years” as having inflicted “deep suffering on the Cuban people.”

Guo said the recent United Nations vote “once again demonstrates the overwhelming support of the international community for the just struggle of the Cuban people to safeguard their sovereignty and resist foreign interference and the blockade.”

“This vote shows once again that unilateralism and bullying are unjust and unpopular,” Guo added, noting that China “has consistently voted since 1992 in favor of resolutions opposing the U.S. blockade.”

He reaffirmed that China “will firmly uphold international justice and continue to support the Cuban people in their efforts to resist external pressure and pursue development suited to their national conditions.”

The remarks came after the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning the U.S. embargo on Cuba, with 165 countries voting in favor, seven against, and 12 abstaining.

Although nonbinding, the resolution—introduced annually by Cuba since 1992—has long been seen by Havana as a diplomatic triumph, reflecting near-unanimous global opposition to the U.S. policy.
