National Freedom Front of Sri Lankna Condemns U.S. Attempt to Defeat Cuba’s UN Resolution

The National Freedom Front (NFF) has issued a strong statement condemning what it calls a “shameful attempt” by the United States to undermine the resolution submitted by Cuba to the United Nations calling for the lifting of U.S. sanctions against the island nation.

The statement, signed by NFF Leader and Chairman Wimal Weerawansa, denounces the renewed U.S. efforts to block Cuba’s annual resolution, which has consistently received overwhelming support from the international community.

Mr. Weerawansa noted that the U.S. sanctions against Cuba have lasted for nearly 60 years, severely affecting the country’s economy and the lives of its people. He also recalled that Cuba has been submitting resolutions to the United Nations for almost 30 years, each time gaining broad global backing.

“In 2024, only the United States and Israel voted against Cuba’s proposal, while the vast majority of member states supported it,” Mr. Weerawansa pointed out, adding that the growing respect and solidarity shown toward Cuba by nations worldwide has become a major embarrassment for Washington.

The NFF statement also accuses the United States of resorting to “false propaganda and intimidation” in an effort to influence other countries ahead of the upcoming UN vote on October 28 and 29.

Mr. Weerawansa emphasized that member states must act with integrity and support Cuba’s resolution, upholding the principles of sovereignty, fairness, and human dignity.
